Inrate’s know-how used for the first carbon ranking of French banks
11/26/2010
On the 22nd of November, the French sustainability consultancy Utopies together with the Friends of the Earth association released the first carbon footprint ranking of the largest French banks with the help of Swiss sustainability rating agency Inrate.
The publication of this carbon ranking is related to an awareness campaign among the French public in order to pressure banks and regulators to integrate climate change issues in the development of financial products and in the way they manage investors’ savings.
According to Philippe Spicher, CEO of Inrate, “the need for a structural transformation to achieve a low carbon economy is today largely recognized. In such context, the banking sector has a central role to play due to its huge leverage effect. This ranking provides a new way of looking at the role of banks in the climate change debate”.
For investors, being exposed to climate risks – especially rising CO2 prices and energy costs – is of increasing importance. To this end, the envIMPACT® methodology developed by Inrate in 2005 modelizes the GHG emissions of companies over the entire value chain of their products and services. With the help of envIMPACT®, investors can calculate the carbon footprint of their investments, build low-carbon portfolios or reduce the carbon intensity of existing portfolios.
